For my final project, I would like to focus on something that is related to sports and what I am writing about in my HIST 800 paper because it would be cool to add some type of visual like a map to my paper. However, that project is just not feasible within the amount of time that I have to complete the project. I am however considering using what I have learned in this class and possibly creating a map to go with my dissertation. It just is not feasible because I do not have any complete data sets to generate this project, I would love for the project to be neat and complete with data so I think that it will not be great with just 3-4 weeks to complete the project.
In terms of what I am working on for this project I think I can go in two directions. The first, I am thinking about mapping out the public Black high schools in South Carolina in 1940 to 1970. I just need to think about the broader historical question I would ask when creating the map of these high schools. This is a project that I could bring into a broader conversation of my dissertation, which I plan on writing about Black public high school athletes in North and South Carolina. My second plan is to make a map of the students that migrated from the South to Northern colleges because the Southern colleges had not desegregated yet. This data would come from Crystal R. Sanders' book, A Forgotten Migration. This seems interesting and something that I could merely use various types of tools within ArcgisPro, so I am particularly interested in that. However I think the conversation with Dr. Kennedy will help make my decision.
